Abstract:
Today's apple breeding programmes are inter-related with other research disciplines.
The complex, dynamic and interdisciplinary interactions require innovative approaches, including modern tools and techniques.
We describe some important areas where collaboration is essential and give some examples: database management; phytopathology; entomology and ecology; molecular biology; fruit quality and sensory perception.
The examples show that interdisciplinary approaches can considerably increase the efficiency and relevance of apple breeding in the future.
