THE XYLOGLUCAN AND THEIR OLIGOSACCHARIDES ON THE INTERACTION CARNATION-FUSARIUM

Abstract:
We try to examine the role of xyloglucan and its oligosaccharides (XGOs) during the invasion of Fusarium on carnation. For the xyloglucan detection we developed a technique based on iodine stain of callus of carnation. We compared the xyloglucan concentration in resistant and susceptible varieties. The “Dual” culture was used to identify the activity of the XGOs on callus. There is an inverse relation between the xyloglucan concentration in the callus primary cell wall and the response in “Dual” culture to the presence of the Fusarium; the least resistant callus has more xyloglucan within the primary cell wall. Therefore, the resistant varieties have less xyloglucan on their walls than the susceptible ones on carnation. We analyzed the effect of 3 XGOs (XG7, XG8 and XG9) on callus in “Dual” culture with Fusarium, and demonstrated that XG9 decreases the defense response on resistant varieties.
