RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CYTOKININS AND PHOTOPERIOD IN FLORAL DEVELOPMENT OF SOLIDAGO X LUTEUS

Abstract:
Solidago x luteus (M.L. Greene) Brouillet and Semple (= x Solidaster hybridus, x S. luteus) is a perennial plant that has been explored mainly as a cut flower. Hormonal involvement in floral development has not been studied before. The rosette plants develop a single floral stalk, with numerous ramifications on the upper third of the stalk and, with an inflorescence on the apex of each one. The purpose of this work was to determine by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) the endogenous levels of cytokinins (Cks) under long days (LD) or short days (SD). The levels of zeatin-type (zeatin (Z), zeatin riboside (ZR)) and isopentenyladenosine-type (isopentenyladenine (iP), isopentenyladenosine (iPA)) were examined, but only iP and iPA were detected. The iP content decreased when plants were subject to SD, this could be the consequence of a more active transport rate of iPA, speeding up the flower bud anthesis.
