Abstract:
One of the most limiting problems that affects the production of cut flowers in Colombia are the diseases.
An important number of diseases caused by fungi, bacteria, nematodes and virus are recognized.
Some of these diseases are very important, such as the vascular wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. dianthi and the fairy ring spot caused by Cladosporium echinulatum in carnation.
Among bacterial diseases, the crown gall caused by Agrobacterium tumefaciens is common in rose and chrysanthemum.
The most common nematodes are the genus Pratylenchus, Meloidogyne and Paratylenchus. Heterodera trifolii which are found frequently in carnation, attacking simultaneously with Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. dianthi. The most frequent virus is the Carnation Mottle Virus (CaMV), that reduces especially the quality of carnation flowers.
The Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus (TSWV) is recognized mainly in chrysanthemum, gerbera, gypsophila and aster.
The white rust of chrysanthemum, caused by the fungus Puccinia horiana, is the most important quarantine disease for exportation; this disease is found occasionally in some farms that produce flowers for the local market and a few farms for exportation as well.
Also there are some important diseases not registered in Colombia yet.
