ISHS Acta Horticulturae 481: International Symposium on Growing Media and Hydroponics

STATUS OF THE COMMERCIAL HYDROPONIC INDUSTRY IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Author:   D. Brentlinger
Abstract:
The hydroponic industry in the United States has undergone many changes in the past 25 years with respect to greenhouse covers, environmental control systems, fertigation procedures, and pollination methods, to mention a few. In spite of the demand by baby boomers who control much of the wealth in the U.S. for tasty vegetables at any cost, the projected acreage for hydroponic greenhouses in 1997 stood at only 760 acres. In this paper, to help develop this industry, the crops, hydroponic systems, marketing, and means to protect product integrity are discussed.
