ISHS Acta Horticulturae 481: International Symposium on Growing Media and Hydroponics

YIELD, QUALITY AND PHOTOSYNTHETIC ACTIVITY OF GREENHOUSE-GROWN 'MADELON' ROSES ON PERLITE-ZEOLITE SUBSTRATE MIXTURES.

Keywords:   soilless culture, photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration
Abstract:
To evaluate the performance of perlite-zeolite mixtures in a heated plastic greenhouse, ‘Madelon’ roses were installed on a soilless bag system containing zeolite and perlite, at 100:0, 25:75, 50:50 and 75:25 (v/v) ratios. Yield (number of flowers), cut flower quality, CO2 assimilation rate, stomatal conductance and leaf transpiration rate of the rose plants were measured from May until September 1996. Plants grown on the 25:75 zeolite:perlite medium had the highest total yield and the largest number of cut roses with stem length >70 cm and 50–60 cm. Net photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance showed no significant differences among plants grown on different substrates.
