DIFFERENT WAYS OF MONITORING THE IRRIGATION OF CONTAINER AND POT PLANTS

Abstract:
Irrigation must allow a sufficient water flow through the plant to guarantee a physiological activity so that the biomass production fits in with the objectives of quality and quantity of the crops. To optimize the irrigation, it is necessary to determine the transfer parameters on which to support the monitoring. These parameters may originate from the substrate, the plant or the atmosphere.

In the substrate, it is possible to use the water potential or the water content. The same parameters can be used for the plant. Differents sensors exist: leaf water potential or variation of the stem diameter. It is also possible to measure the sap flux directly, or the variation of the canopy's temperature in relation to the transpiration flux. In the atmosphere, the estimation of the flux requires the calculation of the potential evapo-transpiration (PET).
