NUTRIENT CULTURE FOR KOREAN GINSENG (PANAX GINSENG C. A. MEYER)

Authors:   K.W. Park, G.P. Lee, Y.G. Park
Keywords:   Potassium concentration, ionic strength, water culture, substrate culture
Abstract:
Ginseng (Panax ginseng) grew better in water culture compared to substrate culture. The suitable ionic strength for ginseng culture was 0.5–1.1mS/cm. High concentration of potassium in nutrient solution resulted in an increase in ginseng root growth. Among the tested substrates, peatmoss appeared suitable for ginseng, probably due to favorable physical and chemical properties, such as bulk density, organic matter content, and cation exchange capacity. Physiological disorders and root-rot were observed in water culture, so the use of disease-free root stock and/or sterilization of nutrient solution will be a prerequisite for increasing the production of good quality ginseng root.
