DEVELOPMENT OF NUTRIENT FILM TECHNIQUE “NFT” IN CHILE: THE USE OF INTERMITTENT RECIRCULATION REGIMES

Authors:   G. Carrasco, E. Rodríguez, P. Escobar, J. Izquierdo
Keywords:   soilless system, intermittent recirculation, lettuce
Abstract:
Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) is being utilised in Chile as a soilless method for vegetable production. Leafy vegetables like lettuce have been specially cultivated in NFT because this technique provides an effective method of water control, reassuring the sanitary quality of the fresh product. Research on NFT has been done for evaluating different species and cultivars, and also, intermittent recirculation regimes in order to get a reduction in electric energy and water and nutrient solution comsuptions. Recently, NFT has been adopted by growers in Chile, as a feasible method for producing vegetables for fresh market.
