Abstract:
Turkey is the main genetic origin of fig (Ficus carica L.) in the world. Various types of fig cultivars can be found in the different climatic conditions of Anatolia. In the south valleys of Siirt, Bottan, Diyarbakir, Elazi&scarong, Gaziantep, Besni, Kahramanmaras, Ceyhan and Ahir mountain mainly wild figs are located. Thus, South East Anatolia and the East Mediterranean regions are known as the main genetic resources of figs, especially for fresh fig cultivars.

In this study, the genetic resources of figs and some results of the selection and conservation studies carried out on figs in the East Mediterranean and South East Anatolia region, are given. There are 38 commercial fig cultivars in the South East Anatolia region; 4 of them are located in S1anhurfa, 4 in Gaziantep, 9 in Mardin and 15 in Siirt. If we consider the East Mediterranean region, there are 32 commercial fig cultivars, which are located in Hatay, Kahramanmaras1, Adana, Kozan, Karaisah and Tarsus. In the selection work carried out from 1983 till 1996, we completed the adaptation and quality characteristics of the previous works and 12 fig clones were found in the best quality fresh fruits. In the experiment carried out during 1995–1996, we selected 31 new fig clones from the East Mediterranean region and adaptation studies of them have begun. Some plant and fruit characteristics of these clones will be presented in this paper.
