Authors:   M. Nalbant, N. Sahin, S. Aydin
Keywords:   Ficus carica L, fig, male fig, clonal selection, varietal evaluation
Abstract:
In order to develop new fig cultigens for drying, caprification or fresh market, selection studies were started in Turkey in the 1960's and 70's. A study was started in 1960 to evaluate the phenological and pomological properties of 18 caprifig varieties (Öncel, 1969). A second step consisted of identifying 32 caprifig varieties at the caprifig collection of the Institute (Er˘oglu, 1982). A clonal selection was carried out within Sarilop (=Calimyrna), between 1975–1978 the main drying variety in the Aegean region, and 157 individuals were selected. 86 clones were chosen among them and an orchard was established. The selected material was further evaluated by Er˘oglu (1982), Aksoy et al. (1993) and Kutlu and Aksoy (1997). To present new valuable plant material for the fresh fig market, a varietal selection was planned in 1975, and 271 varieties were received for further evaluation. The collection established was characterized by Eroglu (1982) and Aksoy et al. (1993).
