Abstract:
Turkey is the major producer of dried figs.
All the production comes from plantations of the Sarilop (=Calimyrna) variety in the western Aegean Region.
Although this variety is known to possess a superior dried fruit quality, it is susceptible to ostiole-end cracks, sunscald and has a wide opening which permits the entrance of insects.
In order to overcome the quality related problems, a study was started during the period, 1975–1978 to select high performing Sarilop clones in the region (Eroglu, 1982). In 1982, nursery trees of 86 clones were propagated and planted at the Fig Research Institute.
Through a project carried out in 1991–1994, 86 clones were evaluated and 10 clones were determined to rank at higher positions and accepted as promising.
These clones were further evaluated in 1994–1996 in terms of dried fruit quality, yield and ripening season.
Data obtained for three seasons was subjected to a statistical analysis.
High deforming clones will be recommended for further studies.
