ASPARAGUS IN THE PERUVIAN COASTAL REGION: PRESENT AND FUTURE |

| Abstract:
The Peruvian coastal region is a narrow arid area between the Pacific Ocean and the western side of the Andes Mountains. Its elevation is from sea level to 500 meters above sea level. It is crossed by several rivers forming alluvial valleys. In this region 50% of the agricultural production takes place. Moreover, more than 50% of the population of the country is also located here. The asparagus crop is well adapted to the characteristics of the Peruvian coastal region. Approximately 20,000 ha are being grown at present. About 65% is white asparagus production and 35% is green asparagus. Almost all of the production is exported (white spears as a processed product and green as fresh and some frozen). Asparagus is easily produced all year round. In the future the area is expected to increase in asparagus production, primarily in the area and in the Trujillo area where an irrigation project has made land available suitable for white asparagus production. It is anticipated that in five years the asparagus area will surpass 30,000 hectares. | |
