ISHS Acta Horticulturae 479: IX International Asparagus Symposium

ASPARAGUS DECLINE AND REPLANT PROBLEM: A REVIEW OF THE CURRENT SITUATION AND APPROACHES FOR FUTURE RESEARCH

Author:   P.C. Keulder
Abstract:
Due to the impact of asparagus decline on the economic yield of spears, and its relationship with the replant problem, the relevant literature is reviewed. The following aspects are included: economic matters, production and nature of allelopathic chemical substances, interactions with fungal and viral infections, influence of soils, and current control measures. Approaches with regard to strategies and research on the above matters are evaluated, including the following: soil fumigation, breeding of fungal tolerant cultivars, host-parasite interactions, and autotoxin resistance.
