ISHS Acta Horticulturae 479: IX International Asparagus Symposium

PERFORMANCE OF CULTIVARS AND LINES OF ASPARAGUS IN MICHIGAN AND NEW JERSEY

Authors:   S. A. Garrison, C. Chin, J. Bakker, John F. Kelly
Abstract:
Replicated field trials were established at the Southwestern Michigan Research Center (SWMREC), Benton harbor, MI and at the Rutgers Agricultural Research and Extension Center (RAREC), Bridgeton, NJ. Released cultivars and experimental hybrids from breeding programs in the USA and from international sources were compared for yield, spear size, and spear characteristics. Foliar disease resisitance was evaluated at several locations.

Over seven harvest seasons at SWMREC, a new male cultivar, Jersey Supreme (tested as 44Px22-8 and NJ 880) was the highest yielding of the 36 entries, followed by 362Mx22–34, Jersey Giant, Jersey Gem and E3xGRHS (a dioecious hybrid to be released by Michigan State University). At the Hart location in Michigan, the cultivar Franklin had the highest average yield of 34 entries over seven harvest seasons, followed by Lucullus 328, Jersey Gem, Jersey Supreme, Lucullus 55,362Mx22–34, and Jersey Giant.

A second trial established at SWMREC, was harvested for 5 seasons. A new male cultivar, Jersey Delux (tested as 56x22-34 and NJ 854) had the highest average yield followed by G27x22-34, Jersey General, Gynlim, Jersey Gem, 362Mx22-34 and Jersey Giant.

At the RAREC in New Jersey, a trial established in 1989 compared 18 New Jersey cultivars and experimental hybrids. The highest yielding cultivars over the 1991–1996 seasons were Jersey Giant, Jersey Gem, Jersey Knight, G27x22–34, 277Cx22x–34 and Greenwich.

A trial established in 1990 compared 25 cultivars and experimental hybrids. The highest yielding cultivars were Jersey Delux, Jersey Giant, 362Mx22–34, Jersey Knight, Jersey Gem and Greenwich.

A second trial established in 1990 compared 11 cultivars from international breeding programs, Jersey Giant and Jersey Knight were the highest yielding cultivars followed by Gynlim, Lucullus 234 and Franklim.
