IMPROVING THE EFFICIENCY OF CULTIVAR EVALUATION OF GREEN ASPARAGUS |

| Abstract:
An essential component of asparagus production is the correct choice of cultivar. Cultivar trials with asparagus are expensive to establish, and even more expensive to harvest and record for the researcher. Marketable yield is a function of total yield and product quality. Product quality depends on many factors including spear cutting height. It is proposed that once the basic yield/quality characteristics of a cultivar have been determined, the cost of cultivar evaluation on any site worldwide can be significantly reduced, by a simplified harvesting and recording regime. Cultivar evaluation is a key component of any asparagus improvement research program. The perennial nature of the crop, and the inability to change a cultivar once it has been planted, ensures that choice of cultivar is critical to the successful commercial production of the crop. | |
