PRELIMINARY RESULTS OF THE SECOND INTERNATIONAL ASPARAGUS CULTIVAR TRIAL IN ICA, PERU

Authors:   E. Oordt, F. Vaccari, J. Carillo, P. Velásquez, W. Apaza
Abstract:
A trial with twenty-three asparagus cultivars originating from different countries was established at two sites on the Ica region of the Peruvian Coast in the autumn of 1996. These trials are part of the Second International Asparagus Cultivar Trials, and some preliminary results are presented here. The first harvest of white asparagus was recorded, as well as observations on the behavior of the cultivars in the seedbed with regards to germination, vigor and response to asparagus rust attack.

Yield was greatest with Gijnlim, Pla-2232, Grande, UC157-F1, Val-Prima, Jacq Ma 2004, Atlas, Venlim, Jersey Giant, Ida-Lea and Pla-2132. On the other hand, considering only marketable yield, the outstanding cultivars were Grande, Atlas, Pla-2232, Ida-Lea, Gijnlim, Jacq-Ma 2014, Pla-2132, Jersey Jewell and UC157-F1. Cultivars with poor first-year yields were Cipres, Jersey Gem, Gloria, Jersey Knight and Andreas.

Response to rust in the field varied for each cultivar. Two observations were made on the first year after transplanting. No relation has been found regarding average number of roots or root lengths in the transplanted crowns with first-year production.

Grande, Pla-2232 Atlas, Pla-2132 Ida-Lea and UC157-F1 produced highest number of class “A” and “B” spears. Grande, Atlas, Pla-2232 and Ida Lea produced the highest percentage of marketable spears, while cultivars with high spear discards -non-marketable- were Gloria and Jacq-Ma 2004.
