TRANSGENIC PLUMS RESISTANT TO PLUM POX VIRUS INFECTION AND PRELIMINARY RESULTS OF CROSS-HYBRIDIZATION

Abstract:
Prunus domestica genetically transformed with the capsid protein (CP) gene of the plum pox potyvirus (PPV) are resistant to PPV by using chip-budding or aphid inoculation. One line resistant to PPV, the C-5 clone was selected and used as source of pollen to cross with the tetraploid Prunus spinosa rootstock. Analysis of seedlings showed a feasibility of the cross-hybridization. The examination of the genome content of these hybrid plants showed that the majority of plants produced could contain the CP transgene.
