THE INFLUENCE OF CULTIVAR AND ROOTSTOCK ON CONTENT OF MINERALS IN LEAVES OF PLUM TREES

Keywords:   mineral content, rootstock, plum trees, leaves
Abstract:
Contents of five macro-elements in plum leaves i.e. N, P, K, Ca and Mg were investigated. Leaves for analyses were taken from plum trees grown in two field experiments situated in the central part of Poland.

Experiments I: was planted in the spring of 1990 with four plum cultivars: " Cacañska Najbolia ", "Stanley", "Valor" and "Dabrowice Prune" and two rootstock. Seedlings of Myrobalan (Divaricata Prune) and Wangenheim Prune.

Experiments II was established in the spring of 1991 included two cultivars - "Empress" and "Valor", grafted on three rootstocks. Seedlings of Myrobalan and Wangenheim Prune and vegetalively propagated rootstocks - "Pixy".

The obtained results proved that rootstocks had a significant influence on the content of macro-elements in leaves of plum trees.

In experiments I, plum cultivars grafted on seedlings of Myrobalan had significantly higher contents of K and Mg in leaves than the same cultivars on "Wangenheim Prune" rootstock. The mineral contents of other components varied within years. Leaves of cv. " Cacañska Najbolia " had more K, but cv. "Dabrowice Prune" showed a tendency to contain higher level of Ca in the leaves.

In experiment II: both cultivars grafted on "Pixy" contained more K in leaves than trees on other rootstocks. It was also proved that leaves of cultivar "Valor" contained significantly more P in both years of investigation than cultivar "Empress". The contents of other macro-elements in leaves of these plum cultivars in two experiments were different and varied in years of investigation influenced by meteorological conditions.
