ISHS Acta Horticulturae 478: VI International Symposium on Plum and Prune Genetics, Breeding, Pomology

SCREENING OF PLUMS AND PRUNES FOR FRESH CONSUMPTION, 1988–1997.

Authors:   H. Kemp, H. Wustenberghs
Keywords:   plum, prune, Prunus domestica, cultivars, pomological value
Abstract:
In The Netherlands and Belgium, plums are mainly grown for fresh consumption. In the last decade, interest for large-fruited, well-tasting blue plums is growing. Yellow or yellow-red skinned fruits are loosing interest because of their susceptibility to skin bruising and browning.

In order to intensify the evaluation of plum cultivars in both countries, collaboration has been organized between the above-mentioned institutes. From 1990, three trees per cultivar on St. Julien A (sometimes Pixy or Ferlenain) rootstock have been and are being planted on both sites. Main evaluation criterions are: eating quality, fruit weight (≥ 45 g), shape (ovate-rounded), and colour, productivity, picking period, storability, and shelf-life. Other important aspects are tree habit, self-fertility and stone adherence.

From 1994 till 1997, in total 75 cultivars/selections were under test. With regard to eating quality, productivity, fruit size, colour and shape, Avalon, Excalibur, Jubileum, Valor, and Voyageur appear promising for commercial growing. Jubileum is mainly interesting for its fruit size, Avalon and Voyageur especially for their taste, and Excalibur and Valor for both traits. Since the early 90s, these cultivars are being planted in commercial holdings.

Amongst the other accessions, Centenar-2, Record, Valerija, Victory, V68011, and V70031 seem interesting because of their large blue fruits, (rather) good taste, and productivity.
