JAPANESE PLUM BREEDING PROGRAMME AT FLORENCE: FIRST RESULTS |

| Abstract:
In Japanese plum the high level of intra- and inter-incompatibility as well as the rather total auto-incompatibility of most cultivars reduce the possibility of character combination and segregation. These are partly the reasons why most cultivars of Japanese plum released in this last 10 years have origin from free pollination instead of controlled crossing. The Horticulture Department of the University of Florence (Italy) began Japanese plum breeding in 1989 with the aim of developing new cultivars suitable for the climatic conditions of Central-north Italy. Main objectives include precocity of fruit ripening, higher and constant productivity, better eating quality. From many cross-combinations were evaluated and propagated 25 very interesting selections with the main valuable characteristics of the aimed objectives. | |
