A SEARCH FOR A DWARFING PLUM ROOTSTOCK |

| Abstract:
With the aim to find a suitable dwarfing plum rootstock two rootstock trials were made. In a first trial planted spring 1990 with the plum cultivar Victoria as test cultivar, the rootstocks Ferciana Ishtara®, Marianna (origin Infel), Marianna 2624, Myruni, Prunus blireana, Prunus cerasifera ‘Hollywood’, Prunus dasycarpa,and Reine Claude (origin Infel, France) were compared with the standard St. Julien A. Prunus blireana came forward as the sole dwarfing rootstock, but its compatibility is doubtful. All other rootstocks grew either equally strong or a bit more vigorously than the standard. In a second trial, sledge (Prunus spinosa) seedlings were evaluated with Opal plum as test cultivar. This trial was planted in the spring of 1992, after a selection programme for suitable sledge types in the preceding nursery years. Results obtained so far show that within sledge quite a range in vigour exists when used as a plum rootstock. Some interesting selections with regard to growth vigour, root sucker tendency, and preciousness were found. However, more years of evaluation are needed before definite statements on compatibility and productivity can be made. The results show that it might be possible to find suitable dwarfing rootstocks within species related to plum. | |
