POSTHARVEST MARKET LIFE POTENTIAL OF SOME PLUM FRUIT CULTIVARS (PRUNUS DOMESTICA L.) GROWN IN POLAND

Author:   H. Plich
Keywords:   Market life potential, internal breakdown sensitivity
Abstract:
The storability of some plum fruit cultivars grown in Polish orchards was investigated. Before and after storage ethylene production, fruit flesh firmness, soluble solids content and the incidence of physiological disorders were determined. Among the investigated plums cv. Valor was found to be the most suitable for storage at -0.5 °C - the temperature established as an optimal. After 4 weeks of storage at that temperature and three days of their shelf life at room temperature more than 90% of them were acceptable for consumption in a fresh stage.

The results, so far obtained, show that plums can be safely stored at - 0.5 °C for the following period of time:

- cv. Valor 4 to 6 weeks
- cvs. Bluefre, Dabrowicka Prune, and Amers 3 to 4 weeks
- cv. Stanley 2 to 3 weeks

Some pecularities of storage behavior of above plum fruit cultivars are described.
