GROWTH AND CROPPING OF PLUMS GRAFTED ON PIXY ROOTSTOCK AND PLANTED IN DIFFERENTIATED DENSITY

Authors:   Z.S. Grzyb, M. Sitarek
Keywords:   Plum, density of planting, fruiting
Abstract:
Growth, cropping and fruit quality of four plum cultivars ['Oullins Golden Gage', 'Cacanska Najbolja', 'Stanley', 'Italian Prune'] grafted on Pixy rootstock and planted in three different distances in the row: 1,5 m, 2,0 m, 2,5 m was investigated.

Tree vigour, expressed by trunk cross sectional area (TCA) measured at the end of sixth growing season was significantly affected by planting distance. With decreasing distance in the row the vigour expressed by TCA decreased.

The distance influenced also the yield of all plum cultivars. The highest yield over the first four cropping years was obtained from the trees planted at the distance 2,5 m and the lowest, at.1,5 m. Calculation of yield efficiency (kg/cm2) showed no significant differences between planting distances.

Fruit weight from the trees grown at the distance 1,5 m was slightly smaller than from similar trees grown at the distance at 2,5 m.
