MODELLING AND SIMULATIONS TO STUDY FARM ADAPTATION IN AN AGRICULTURAL DISTRICT - CASE OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLE FARMS IN THE CALAVON VALLEY (VAUCLUSE, FRANCE)

Abstract:
Fruit and vegetables producing farms are faced with strong market competition and a constantly evolving environment. Improving their competitiveness and maintaining farmers' income and the durability of farms imply certain adaptations of their production systems, an enhancement of product quality and improved valorisation of their production. To study these various aspects, the proposed approach relies on modelling through linear programming. It can be used for identifying possible adaptations and assessing their impact at the farm level and at the level of the small agricultural region.

The reliability of the method lies in the fact that simulations have been undertaken in real farming situations with their micro-regional diversity, and taking into account constraints observed on the farms and the farmers' strategies. The various hypotheses adopted and the results of simulations were submitted to farmers and agricultural advisers for approval.
