Abstract:
The traditional deterministic definition of bacterial lag leads to controversial results when compared to its stochastic counterpart.
If the cells divide according to the Poisson birth process, then the average lag time of the individual cells is longer than the traditionally interpreted lag time of the whole population.
This result is analysed here in an intuitive way, using the concept of ‘physiological state’, as introduced by Baranyi and Roberts (1994).
