Abstract:
A laboratory incubation experiment (22 °C) with two pear species (P. communis, cv.
Beurre Bosc and P. pyrifolia, cv.
Hosui) was carried out to determine the effects of particle size and age of pruning wood residues on the potential C- and N-mineralization in two Chilean soils.
Particle size had a substantial impact on C mineralization; however, no differences were observed for N mineralization.
After 30 days of incubation, the smaller particles (< 0.5 or 0.5–2 mm) produced more CO2 than coarse (2–4 mm) particles; however, the differences for medium size particles increase by the end of the incubation period.
The age of wood had no effect, but the specie had a marked influence, on C mineralization and less clear effect on N-mineralization.
Differences are explained on the basis of residue quality rather than residue age and soil type.
