Abstract:
The effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) colonization on growth and root system morphology of Olea europaea L. plants, cultivar ‘Moraiolo’, ‘Leccino’ and ‘Frantoio’ was studied. AM inoculation enhanced the growth of the olive plants, compared to controls, and induced different behaviour of the three olive cultivars in response to infection by Glomus mosseae. The overall effect of mycorrhizal formation on olive root morphology was the increase of lateral root frequency, giving rise to plants with root systems consisting of a greater proportion of higher order roots.
