Abstract:
From 1989 to 1996, the effects of monocone and vase training systems on vegetative development, yield and quality of the oil of the cultivar Frantoio, Leccino and Maurino, were evaluated in an olive orchard planted in 1986, in Central Italy. The vegetative growth tended to be higher in Frantoio and Leccino than in Maurino. The training system did not affect tree growth in Leccino and Frantoio, whereas in Maurino the vase system promoted a greater tree development. The cumulated yield per tree was similar in all the cultivars. In Leccino and especially in Maurino the cumulated yield was higher when the trees were trained to vase (+10% and +32%, respectively), whereas no differences between the two training systems were found in Frantoio. With the exception of the chlorophyll content which was higher in Frantoio, all the other oil characteristics were similar in all the cultivars. The training system did not affect the oil quality. Overall the vegetative and productive performances were good for all the cultivars. The training system did not affect yield efficiency, fruit characteristics and the quality of the oil, it only influenced tree growth, which was cultivar dependent.
