Abstract:
As a result of a clonal and sanitary selection study, conducted in previous years, twenty seven clones were selected from the following ten cultivars: 'Azeiteira' (syn.
Azeitoneira), 'Blanqueta' (syn.
Branquita), 'Carrasquenha', 'Cobrancosa', 'Cordovil de Serpa', 'Galega Vulgar', 'Macanilha Algarvia', 'Manzanilla dos Hermanas', 'Redondil' and 'Verdeal Alentejana'. In October 1995, plants of these clones were planted in the field, in the Alentejo province (south of Portugal), in order to evaluate and compare the performance of the selected clones, in relation to the environmental conditions - climate and agricultural practices - specially during juvenility.
Here we present the observations that were made during the first year after planting.
Data on flower quantity, per tree, were taken in May 1996, following an arbitrary 0 to 3 scale (0, absence of flowers and 1 to 3 low, medium and high amount of flower in a tree, respectively). Of the twenty seven clones under study all produced flower except two clones of 'Cobrancosa', two clones of 'Verdeal Alentejana', and one clone of 'Manzanilla dos Hermanas'. The percentage of trees, per cultivar, that flowered varied from 93,8%, observed in 'Cordovil de Serpa' and 0% in 'Verdeal Alentejana'. Regarding the amount of flower, the following clones: 'Blanqueta', 'Cobrancosa', 'Cordovil de Serpa' and 'Macanilha Algarvia', fell within group 3 of the scale above mentioned, whereas 'Azeiteira', 'Carrasquenha', 'Manzanilla dos Hermanas' and 'Redondil' fell in group 2. Observations on fructification were made in November 1996. Clones from all cultivars entered fructification, except three clones of 'Cobrancosa', two clones each of 'Azeiteira', 'Galega Vulgar' and 'Verdeal Alentejana' and one clone each of 'Carrasquenha', 'Cordovil de Serpa' and 'Manzanilla dos Hermanas'. The percentage of trees that produced fruits varied from 75%, in 'Macanilha Algarvia' to 0% in 'Verdeal Alentejana'. This work is being continued in order to determine the best of the selected clones.
