ISHS Acta Horticulturae 474: III International Symposium on Olive Growing

COLLECTION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF OLIVE (OLEA EUROPAEA L.) GERMPLASM RESOURCES IN TUSCANY

Authors:   C. Antonio, C. Claudio, S. Graziano
Keywords:   Olive, germplasm
Abstract:
During 1990–1995 a programme was conducted in 16 Tuscany districts to collect olive germplasm. Exploration allowed to collect 92 olive phenotypes; 22 of them were described for the first time. At the present, the whole Tuscany germplasm is maintained at the research farm (S. Paolina) in Follonica, (property of National Research Council of Italy). The 92 accessions have been classified by using a total of 37 morphological characters (including whole plant, leaf, inflorescence, fruit and pit).

All the parameters referred to, including photos, plant description and pertinent literature constituted a library catalogue that has been subsequently processed and transferred to Internet (http://www.area.fi.cnr.it./).

Forty-five of the collected cultivars have been also characterized for their rooting ability. Adventitious root formation (ARF) has been evaluated on both untreated and hormon-treated (Indolyl-3-butyric acid) herbaceous cuttings, after 8 weeks of rooting in heated bench, under mist conditions.
