Abstract:
This study describes the use of Image Analysis linked to a scanning electron microscope to determine and analyze the morphology of olive pollen.
In order to improve the knowledge of genetic differences within the olive germplasm and to detect cultivar polimorphism, eight varieties of Olea europaea L., including a group of four genetically closed cultivars (‘Frantoio group’), have been studied.
A wide range of measurements was obtained from digitized SEM images of whole pollen grain and exine pattern.
The size and shape parameters are the major elements in this investigation.
Multivariate approaches were attempted in the classification to find the correlations between variables and to identify homogeneous clusters grouped on the basis of their nearness.
This study has revealed the relationships (differences and similarities) between little-related, more-related and closely related cultivars.
