ISHS Acta Horticulturae 474: III International Symposium on Olive Growing

NEW PERSPECTIVE FOR BIOTECHNOLOGIES IN OLIVE BREEDING: MORPHOGENESIS, IN VITRO SELECTION AND GENE TRANSFORMATION

Authors:   E. Rugini, P. Gutierrez-Pesce, P.L. Spampinato, A. Ciarmiello, C. D'Ambrosio
Keywords:   Olive, rol genes, osmotin gene, regeneration, micropropagation
Abstract:
Improved micropropagation techniques and a novel strategy named «double regeneration system», allowed to obtain somatic embryos in two olive cvs: Canino and Moraiolo. This method of regeneration permitted the production of transgenic plants for rol ABC and osmotin genes from which we expect a modification of vegetative habitus and an increase of fungal resistance, respectively. Transformation technique and biotechnological potentiality in olive genetic improvement are discussed.
