Abstract:
In 1984 the first clonal field trials were planted in different climatic regions of the island Madeira.
Since 1989, agronomic and oenological data were collected in order to know the potential of clones for yield and quality.
In this poster we present first evaluations and conclusions about agronomic characterization of clones, chemical analysis of the grapes and wines, and organoleptic evaluation.
After conclusions obtained in 1994, the best clones were selected and new field trials were planted under a stronger experimental design.
This way we built a solid base for further selection work, microvinification projects and propagation of selected materials.
