HYPERSENSITIVITY - A POSSIBILITY FOR BREEDING SHARKA RESISTANT PLUM HYBRIDS

Author:   W. Hartmann
Keywords:   plums, sharka, hypersensitivity
Abstract:
During the last several years it has been recognized that tolerance or resistance of important plum varieties to plum pox virus is only relative. Some hybrids in our plum breeding program exhibit absolute resistance to virus infection in the field. This resistance is based on hypersensitivity of the host to the virus. In all cases, the virus was isolated from necrotic lesions. Some of the hybrids may be of interest to fruit growers for high plum yield, large fruit size and high quality. The hypersensitive hybrids have been used as parents for crossings in the last several years to combine qualitative and quantitative resistance.
