Abstract:
Chinese cherry (Prunus poseudocerasus) is not only cultured for fruit production, but also used as an important rootstock for P. avium. However, it is susceptible to virus infections The common symptoms are mosaic, dwarfing, rosette and distorted branches.
Spherical virus particles were observed by electron microscope.
For the screening of virus resistant lines, fruits were collected from healthy plants and the embryos were cultured in test-tubes.
Plant #87-39, which grew very well without any symptoms, had no virus particles in it's tissue when observed under the electron microscope.
In grafting experiments, P. avium as scions were grafted on the plants propagated from plant #87-39. The survival percentage was up to 90%, some plants have produced fruits.
The test-tube seedlings developed their roots quickly in the medium and have high potential to propagate virus resistant stocks for P. avium.
