FRAGARIA MULTICIPITA - A PATHOGEN INDUCED TAXON |

| Abstract:
Fragaria multicipita Fernald was originally described as a rare strawberry species known only from a few sites in eastern Canada. It was characterized by small leaves, multiple crowns and lack of runners. These are also symptoms of strawberry multiplier disease. Fragaria chiloensis, when graft inoculated with leaflets from F. multicipita, developed the same symptoms. Several plants of F. multicipita both with and without antibiotic and heat treatments, temporarily reverted to a form and habit characteristic of F. virginiana. Molecular data (presented in a companion abstract at this symposium) implicate a phytoplasma as the cause of the multicipital growth habit. F. multicipita is thus demonstrated to be a diseased form of F. virginiana. | |
