ISHS Acta Horticulturae 471: VIII International Symposium Small Fruit Virus Diseases

FOREWORD

Author:   A. Hadidi
Abstract:
Members of the Scientific Committee of the 17th International Symposium on Virus and Virus-like Diseases of Temperate Fruit Crops and of the 8th International Symposium on Small Fruit Virus Diseases requested Drs. Marina Barba, Wilhelm Jelkmann, and Robert Martin to update the indexing techniques and indicator range of temperate fruit crop viruses and virus-like agents. Each of these three scientists has extensive experience in his or her field: M. Barba (stone fruit viruses), W. Jelkmann (pome fruit viruses), and R. Martin (small fruit viruses). On behalf of the members of the Working Groups on Virus Diseases of Fruit Tree and Small Fruit Crops of The International Society for Horticultural Science, I would like to express my gratitude to Marina, Willi, and Bob for spending the time and energy to update the requested information and for a Job well done (see Acta Horticulturae volumes 471 and 472).

WELCOME ADDRESS BY THE CONVENER OF THE XVII INTERNATIONAL
SYMPOSIUM ON VIRUS AND VIRUS-LIKE DISEASES OF TEMPERATE FRUIT
CROPS AND OF THE VIII INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON SMALL FRUIT
VIRUS DISEASES

Dear Colleagues:

It is my great pleasure to welcome everyone to the 17th International Symposium on Virus and Virus-like Diseases of Temperate Fruit Crops and to the 8th International Symposium on Small Fruit Virus Diseases. This is the first time that these Symposia are being held in the United States, and they are the last Symposia of this century and millenium. We have scientists attending from 30 countries from around the world. They represent Australia, Europe, Asia, North and South America, Africa, and the Middle East.

At these Symposia we have 150 scientific presentations, the largest number of presentations of any temperate fruit crop virology symposium to date. These presentations represent the most recent advances in fruit crop virology. Moreover, these Symposia are an excellent opportunity for us to get to know one another, to encourage international collaboration and cooperation, and to solve problems of significant importance.

We hope that everyone finds our Symposia both scientifically rewarding and enjoyable. We also hope that old friendships are renewed and that new ones are made.

I would like to thank everyone for making the effort in coming to the Symposia and for contributing to their success.

Cordially,

Ahmed Hadidi
Convener of the Symposia
