Abstract:
This ongoing project was started in 1996 at IRTA in collaboration with the CSIC. The main goal is to introduce drought resistance traits into the IRTA scion almond breeding programme. The work is divided into three parts: to determine physiological characters responsible for drought resistance, to identify, isolate and characterize genes related to water stress resistance, and to identify markers linked to quantitative trait loci (QTL) related to resistance to drought stress. Adult and young trees of 8 cultivars are being used: 3 showing high tolerance to drought (‘Falsa Barese’, ‘Masbovera’ and ‘Ramillete’), 3 showing low tolerance (‘Garrigues’, ‘Marcona’ and ‘Nonpareil’), and 1 (‘Lauranne’) showing intermediate tolerance. In addition, the progeny ‘Falsa Barese’x‘Marcona’ (150 seedlings) will be used to map quantitative trait loci (QTL).
