ISHS Acta Horticulturae 470: II International Symposium on Pistachios and Almonds

EFFECTS OF FRUIT BUD THINNING AND PRUNING ON ALTERNATE BEARING AND NUT QUALITY OF PISTACHIO (PISTACIA VERA L.)

Author:   K. Boler
Keywords:   Pistachio, fruit bud thinning, pruning
Abstract:
This study was carried out in a commercial orchard for three years to find out the effects of fruit bud thinning and pruning on alternate bearing and nut quality. Kirmizi and Keten Gomlek cultivars were used in both experiments. Both treatments had positive effects in increasing the yield and nut quality of pistachios. The treated trees also produced a good amount of nuts during off-years. Larger nuts, with a higher proportion of split nuts were obtained in the treated trees. In pruned trees, leaves were bigger in size, thicker and greener in color. Pruned trees had more leaves than the unpruned ones, and considerably more fruit buds on the branches.
