IMPROVEMENT OF FRUIT SET IN ALMONDS USING GROWTH REGULATORS

Authors:   C. Sotomayor, J. Castro
Keywords:   n-m-tolilphtalamic acid, promalin, GA3, Non Pareil, Chile
Abstract:
In order to improve fruit set, several growth regulators were sprayed on almond trees, cv. Non Pareil, at the V Region, Chile. Giberellic acid (GA3) at 50 and 100 ppm was sprayed at full bloom. N-m-tolilphtalamic acid at 200 and 400 ppm, Promalin at 36 and 72 ppm and combinations of both compounds, were sprayed on shoots during the early fruit set stage. The percentage of fruit set was determined by relating the number of initial flowers on each treated shoot and the total number of fruit at harvest. Fruit and seed dry weight and seed length were also measured. Treatments with n-m-tolilphtalamic acid at 200 and 400 ppm, Promalin at 72 ppm and the combination of n-m-tolilphtalamic acid and Promalin, improved fruit set percentages by 45,7%, 44,2%, 45,6% and 77,.2% respectively, compared with the control. No differences were detected in fruit dry weight between treatments and control, and there was no treatment effect on seed dry weight nor seed length.
