NEW ALMOND SELECTIONS AS PUTATIVE ROOTSTOCKS FOR PEACH AND ALMOND

Authors:   E. Caboni, F. Monastra
Abstract:
Seven almond seedlings (M49, M50, M51, M52, M53, M54 and M55) are under evaluation as rootstocks for peach and almond at the Istituto Sperimentale per la Frutticoltura (ISF) in Rome. Three of the seven genotypes (M50, M51 and M55) were grafted with the peach cultivar Emilia, the nectarine cultivar Nectaross and the following almond cultivars: Supernova, Ferragnes, Tuono and Lauranne. Good grafting compatibility with both peach and nectarine cultivars was demonstrated by the all three genotypes. Trunk cross-sectional area growth measurements indicated that M50 induced the highest vigour, while M51 and M55 induced less vigourous trees. M51 had the best rooting capacity in in vitro propagation trials, successfully yielding 90% rooted explants without callus formation. IAA was the most effective rooting hormone for M51, while IBA was effective for the other genotypes. M50 was the poorest rooting genotype, with a success rate of only 22%. More field agronomical evaluations are now in progress, using in vitro cloned material, to reach a complete evaluation of all the genotypes.
