Abstract:
Previous reports indicated the presence of six species of almond in Lebanon: Amygdalus communis L., Amygdalus korschinskii Hand.-Mazz, Amygdalus orientalis Mill, Amygdalus agrestis Boiss., Amygdalus kotshcyi Hoh., and Amygdalus lycioides Spach. Urban expansion, land reclamation, and overgrazing have undoubtedly destroyed many almond-growing sites, and little information is available on the current status of almond germplasm in Lebanon. Objectives of this study were to survey the distribution of wild and cultivated almond, and characterize local almond cultivars. The first objective was met by conducting a field collection throughout the country. The current distribution of almond species was determined and major areas of commercial production of local cultivars were identified. Field samples of the various local varieties were collected and characterized for further selection and conservation purposes.
