Abstract:
This paper describes the method used for field evaluation of new cultivars and advanced selections in a semi-commercial manner in California.
Testing comprises a network of Regional Almond Variety Trials (RAVTs) established in major production areas to test the commercial suitability of new cultivars and advanced selections of almond [Prunus dulcis (Mill.) D.A. Webb]. An initial series of such trials was established between 1974 and 1981. In 1993, a new series of RAVTs was planted.
Test cultivars were planted in single rows, alternately with standard cultivars that bloom at the same time for cross-pollination and comparison.
