ALMOND GROWING IN CALIFORNIA

Authors:   W.C. Micke, D.E. Kester
Keywords:   [Prunus dulcis (Mill.) D.A. Webb], cultivars, rootstocks, pollination, irrigation, nutrition, pest management, pruning, mechanical harvest
Abstract:
Almond (Prunus dulcis (Mill.) D.A. Webb) is the most widely planted tree crop in California and is almost entirely grown in the Central Valley, an area with a Mediterranean climate and many soils adapted to almond growing. Almond production practices are intensive, including irrigation, nutrition, pollination, orchard floor management, tree training and pruning and pest management. Integrated pest management is widely practiced. Cultivars grown are generally unique to California, and peach seedlings, peach-almond hybrid and Marianna 2624 plum are the rootstocks commonly used. Essentially all almonds grown in California are mechanically harvested.
