Abstract:
Sand culture experiments were set up to investigate the nitrogen (N) requirements of tulips.
To secure maximum yield it was found necessary to supply N from sprouting until flowering in quantities which would keep the N content of daughter bulbs at about 1.6% (dry matter basis) from flowering until harvest.
The most suitable method of N fertilization able to satisfy these requirements was then found from experiments carried out on the loam soil of drained paddy fields.
A top dressing of about 40 kg/ha N, applied in mid-December, was recommended.
