Abstract:
Total solar irradiance is the most important factor affecting winter flowering of gladiolus.
Winter low light energy fluxes affect flower development directly, whereas short days have a dual effect, one of reducing the total daily solar irradiance and the other a photoperiodic effect of reducing the time from planting to flowering, thus decreasing the total solar irradiance.
Plants at the 4 to 6 leaf stages are most sensitive to prevailing light conditions.
Low night temperature is a secondary factor promoting flower blasting.
Plants are most sensitive to chilling injury at the second and the 5th to 7th leaf stage.
