Abstract:
Some Lilium crosses produce seeds with faulty endosperm.
The endosperm may abort at an early stage of development so that the embryo cannot develop fully or it may produce a toxin which damages or kills the embryo.
The excised embryos can be grown aseptically on simple agar nutrient medium to produce hybrids which otherwise would be unobtainable.
A high light intensity encourages embryo development and humid conditions after transference of the plantlets from agar to soil minimises losses.
New species combinations have been obtained by this technique with L.lankongense and with several European and Caucasian species.
