FLOWER-BUD BLASTING IN TULIPS

Authors:   W.J. de Munk, P. Hoogeterp
Abstract:
Blasting is promoted in susceptible varieties by storage and greenhouse conditions. Similar effects resulted from exposure of bulbs to ethylene for 6 weeks (1 to 3 ppm) during storage or of plants in the greenhouse for 3 days (0.5 ppm), or injection of the flower-buds in the greenhouse with ABA (0.5 ml of 20mg/litre). It was found that small bulbs (10/11 cm) and the plants from such bulbs are more sensitive to bud-blasting than larger bulbs (12/13 cm) and their plants.

Unfavourable effects of both storage and greenhouse conditions, including exposure to ethylene, was counteracted by injection of the buds with 0.5 ml of solutions of GA3 (1 g/litre), GA4/7 (0.1 g/litre), or kinetin (6-furfuryl-amino-purine, 0.1 g/litre).
