ISHS Acta Horticulturae 47: II International Symposium on Flower Bulbs

A STUDY OF SMOULDER (SCLEROTINIA NARCISSICOLA GREG,) OF NARCISSUS IN NORTHERN SCOTLAND

Authors:   E.G. Gray, R.S. Shiel
Abstract:
In northern Scotland, trials indicate that infection with the smoulder fungus, Sclerotinia narcissicola Greg., may reduce the yield of bulbs and the size of flowers. Symptoms in foliage and bulbs are more noticable in wet soil conditions. The disease is most prevalent in multiple bulbs and in the produce of multiple bulbs.

No evidence was obtained of transmission of infection by the bulb mite, Rhizoglyphus echinopus Fum.and Rob. Within bulbs, mycelium of S. narcissicola was observed infecting young scales colonised by a few individuals of the bulb scale mite, Steneotarsonemus laticeps Halb., but not adjacent undamaged scale tissue.
